This chapter of the book "Powdery Mildews: a comprehensive treatise", is dedicated to technical issues related to the culture and preservation of isolates, and the production and delivery of inoculum. The part 5.6 deals with powdery mildew assessment on differents sorts of crops, tackling different disease assessment methods, the frequency and timing of assessment, the size of the sample and incidence-severity relationships.

Description: This protocol presents a visual, non destructive quantification method based on abundance classes for quick monitoring of diseases (brown rot, powdery mildew, leaf curl, shoot blight, peach canker) and animal pests (oriental fruit moth, peach twig borer, aphids, white peach scale, San José scale, mites, Mediterranean fruit fly) on peach tree, at the field scale.

Description: This protocol presents a visual non destructive counting method based on abundance classes to quantify populations of Brachycaudus persicae, Brachycaudus prunicola and Myzus persicae on peach trees. A specific formula for each species allows the experimenter to estimate the real number of individuals for the 3 species.
